In the reading, " Introduction."The Time to Fight is Now." Asian American Women, Academia's Socially Engineered "Privileged Oppresses, "Go Rogued.", the chapter covered the structure of academia in the United States make it difficult for people of color to overcome these problematic issues like race and gender to advance in the world of academics, especially Asian American woman. Due to the model minority stereotype, society assumes that Asian Americans do well in academics; they will surely thrive in academia, which is not the case. I knew that society connects stereotypes with Asian Americans, so I would assume that the university is no different. However, I did not expect that Asian American women who wanted a career in academia would be a target with violence, " including physical and mental health consequences and shockingly low rates of tenure and promotion"(Dariotis and Valverde 35). They were given no status or privilege from the term model minority but instead attacked from the academia leading to Asian American women to battle for equity, tenure, promotions, and justice for the suppression of their voice and work. It is frustrating to see how the university us "privilege oppression"( Valverde) but used for the colonization of women in Asia. The model minority myth may lead Asian Americans to believe that this is a"positive" stereotype. The stereotype has never benefit Asian Americans, except for the people who create and control this. The model minority is a buffer between white and minority groups. The model minority assumed Asian Americans have "privilege" that they never had, so people believe they are thriving academics. I now know that Asian American women are struggling and fighting the academics system who attack their careers.
Does the Asian American community know that there are Asian American scholars that are struggling for there spot in academia or assume that they were fine due to model minority stereotype?
