HaoranHu, A01, Week 3

As an international student who was raised up in China, I don’t really understand why those people willing to sacrifice their body and time even their life to fight for ethnic study. To be honest, I was grown up in a province that everyone is yellow people and everyone has similar sense of national identity, so I never notice what ethnic study mean to me. However, after studying abroad, I slowly found out how ethic mean to us. I gradually noticed that there are different races present in this world, and everyone has different histories and different believes. In this country that white people’s history is the mainstream of the society, it is very important for those colored people to study for their own history and ethic.
Started in UC Berkeley, student lined up on the street and try to fight for their own ethic believes. Their behavior really touches me and makes me realized how ethic is an important issue to us as a student. Just as what the official Radio Station of the University of Illinois said (2016):” Any educated citizen should have a complete understanding of our history, the good and the bad. Learning history from a Native American or Asian American perspective is not “un-American” or “divisive”, it is honest. Hopefully, we as a nation will reach a point when ethnic studies are given the importance that it deserves at all levels of the educational system.”
