Edmond Li ASA 002 A03 Week 3

In the article, ""The Time to Fight Is Now": Asian American Women, Academia's Socially Engineered "Privileged Oppressed," Go Rogue" by Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis, the author describes how Asian American women are treated in education. Although women have gained the privilege of greater education, the root of oppression remains. Asian American women are seen by academic administrators as ideal representations of diversity because of assumptions that they will present exotic faces while remaining silent. (Valverde pg 35) Basically, this means women are expected to not question the system and are punished if they do.

As a male, I do not personally relate to this but I believe this is no different than how women are treated before they were allowed to join the ranks of academia. It seems like they are just there for the sake of diversity. This mirrors the model minority myth that both Asian Americans were also expected to not question the system and this is especially prevalent with Asian American women.

Question: How do Asian American women fight for their rights in academia?
