Ahmed Alhassan - A03 - Week 2

Reading Taking Action: Asian American Faculty Against Injustices in the Academy by
Shirely Hune, my attention was caught particularly by the commentary on the disparity
between different economic classes among Asian-American communities. As stereotypes
such as viewing Asian-Americans as smart, successful and docile have taken root,  they
are not paid particular attention in our society, and thus those among less fortunate
Asian-American communities, don’t receive the resources they need in order to succeed.
The figure below shows that Asian-Americans are the racial group that experiences the
largest income inequality gap. In the United States, where income inequality is becoming
an increasingly crucial issue, it is taking center stage in our political conversations,
as it takes an even more severe toll on marginalized communities. While we may quickly
dismiss Asian-American groups due to the common stereotypes of success and
intelligence, we see from this study that we must pay more attention to Asian-American
groups that have been left behind. Income inequality is often a circular process where
the least fortunate groups stay poor or get poorer due to their limited access to
educational resources, and therefore this issue must be thrust to the forefront of our
discussions revolving around economic inequality, and we must take action against a
corrupt political and economic system that pays little attention to those who need the
most help.
