Aaron Tam A01 Week 3

Blog

For this weeks blog, I decided to use the reading from the introduction of Fight the Tower which was titled "The Time to Fight is Now": Asian America Women, Academia's Socially Engineered "Privileged Oppressed," Go Rogue. This piece of literature entails how the group that has long been known to be "privileged oppressed" and perceived as advantaged, however they are disposable. The fact of the matter is that Asian American women are viewed as being in a position of advantage but are being taken advantage of and overlooked in this industry. They are poorly positioned in the academic power hierarchy and rarely get the recognition and accolades that they deserve. It is much harder for females of this background in this industry to get tenure and promotions compared to others. The plain fact that these women are portrayed as being the model minority is the same reason that they are never heard and always overlooked. I personally believe that due to the fact most race disputes are between the black and white category, many of the asian matters are overlooked or viewed as unimportant. I also believe that because they are viewed as being a model minority or more privileged than they really are, their needs are overlooked as well which is unfair simply due to the fact that they aren't known for speaking up or raising awareness of their actual positions. I think that this was the very reason behind the Fight the Tower idea and that the issue of the hierarchy of Asian American women should not only be heard, but fixed as well. I believe this model minority idea puts Asians at a disadvantage due to the fact that people fail to realize the hardships they endure and do not focus any attention to them for this very reason. ]

My question is, what other industries are Asian American women facing the same issues in? The medical field? Etc.
