Reading: “Situating Asian Americans in the Political Discourse on Affirmative Action” by Michael Omi and Dana Y. Takagi

Title: Change for Equality

After reading the excerpt “Situating Asian Americans in the Political Discourse on Affirmative Action,” it made me realize how covert and complicated racism has become. Unlike the past, other groups of people need to be taken into consideration, for example the Asian Americans who are greatly affected by policies such as affirmative action. Although affirmative action was placed in order to help minority groups, it is being taken advantage of and Asian Americans are suffering from it. I feel that new actions need to be taken to accommodate for the minority groups who face injustice against such laws. It is not so clear cut anymore, and laws should be made to help all groups of people, and not one that favors a particular group. Like the article says Asian Americans cannot be seen as either left or right nor do they stand in the shadows of the whites or the blacks, they need to be given a voice of their own. From this excerpt, I learned that racism is still prevalent and affecting many minority groups and that there needs to be change to bring equality. Change is necessary. Times are changing and so should our laws. Question: The Asian American population is increasing here in America, will abolishing affirmative action make our schools more asian? How can we adjust our laws so that other minority group as well as the Asian Americans and whites can all be treated equally?
