ASA 2-Reading Reflection #1

Title: Immigration/Racial Discrimination

Word Count:376
1) Title: “Making and Remaking Asian Pacific America” by Bill Ong Hing

I heard from my relatives in Myanmar that they don’t give out visas anymore because of the government is seeing that the whole country is trying to move to America. I was shocked when I found out that Asian Pacific Americans will continue to be the fastest growing ethnic group in US to the next millennium because of immigration after reading this article. I thought Asians are having more struggles to leave their countries now than ever. Women have great advantage in 1965 to 1990 because of the immigration system because if an Asian woman marries a US serviceman who are citizens and by law they became permanent resident of US. Also they can apply for naturalization after 3 years to become a citizen. After she became a citizen, she can then bring her parents and siblings under the fifth preference. I thought Chinese were the fastest growing Asian Pacific group but was shocked to find out that it’s actually Vietnamese.

Question: Is US government trying to be nice to Asians by making these immigration systems or trying to reduce the number of Asian immigrants?

2) Title: “Asian Pacific Americans’ Social Movements and Interest Groups” by Kim Geron

I agree with Geron about Asian Americans facing racial discrimination, violence and segregation for over 150 years but she need to include in her article that Asian Americans are still facing those issues until today. In my opinion, it would never end because Asians will always be judged by their skin color. Vincent Chin’s case is a very important case in Asian Americans’ history. Two white guys hit Vincent Chin’s (Chinese) head with a baseball bat and he bleeds to death and they faced no jail time. Chin’s case brought Asian Community closer together to fight for justice. Chin’s case is part of Asian American History and studied in many schools until today.

Questions:
1)      What is glass ceiling and racial lumping and how did these terms hurts Asians/people?

2)      What is “Japanese American Redress Movement” and how did this movement effected Asian Community?
