Yuxin Shen ASA 002 A03 Week 4

In the second part of the book, "That's No Moon!": Attack of the Institution", includes three types of research about issues of discrimination in academia. To my surprised, even in the top-ranking universities in the world, such as USC, also have a phenomenon of discrimination in the tenure process. Take USC as an example, it violated its stipulations and original hiring contracts so that the result is that Asian female faculties have much less chance than White female faculties of being rewarded. Also, male faculties have larger probabilities of being rewarded than female faculties. There is serious discrimination of gender and race in such a high authority academic organization. I hope that those top universities should realize their mistakes and strengthen the supervision of the assessment process.

Another research focuses on healthy threats to Asian American women. They have to face a combination of bias from others, including "race, ethnic group, accumulation, language skills, class, and sexuality". In general, Asian faculties and other races faculties usually feel that they need to take larger responsibilities for works and have more workload comparing with white faculty members. However, it seems that their efforts are obligatory without receiving more awards or recognition. Therefore, Asian American women easily fall into a negative loop. Especially, for female faculties with family, they have even more pressure since they have to take care of their children by separating time to company family members and providing financial supports. People's health conditions will be threatened under stress from careers and families on both sides. I feel heartbreaking after seeing some Asian faculties said that they need to try their best to keep healthy since their children are the priority to use the money to see a doctor. They do not want to waste money on themselves. It is so depressing. Academia should care more about racial faculties and members with the family to make sure that they all stay in a positive health condition both physical and mental. In this way, faculties can work more effectively which will benefit everyone in the academic organization.
