After reading the article "Taking Action: Asian American Faculty against Injustices in the Academy," I realized Asians are treated unfairly in academic field and the importance for Asian people to ask for their rights. The one of important reasons why discrimination holds are stereotypes, which have huge impacts on people's life. Specifically, I always heard a voice in social media that Asian people are smart; Chinese people are all good at math and they are very hardworking. However, I never think that the statements which sound positive can lead to some bad results. As author, Shirley Hune, mentions in the article many Asian American students did not have chance to get many educational resources and lacked supports from the society because of the existence of stereotypes.
In my opinion, some good adjectives can become shackles on people. It limits people tightly. Specifically, Asian American students are likely to place more emphasis on math so that they can match what other people think of them rather than who they really are. They even cannot access some basic educational resources because they are always considered as good students. When stereotype and racism combine, Asian Americans face more and more unfairness. For example, the educators who are from Asian are less likely to occupy high position in education system. There is no doubt that it is necessary for Asians to against for the stereotypes so that they can be treated fairly.
My question is that what should Asian Americans do when they experience racism. Although things get better, racism still exists in the social media, and daily life. What is the correct way to treat the racism?
