After reading Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis’ “The Time to Fight Is Now”: Asian American Women, Academia’s Socially Engineered “Privileged Oppressed,” Go Rogue.”, I understand how Asian American woman in academia is being “privileged oppressed” and the reason why academia called a “socially engineered” system.
Regarding to historical incidents, power holders tend to create some slander against Asian people, such as “yellow peril”, to protect themselves of always being the largest capitalist. So, Asian American women are fighting against these people, which requires huge brave.
As stated in the article, “Asian American women are seen by academic administrators as ideal representations of diversity because of assumptions that they will present exotic faces while remaining silent.” Being described as “exotic faces”, Asian Americans are still exclude from so called dominate race. And when Asian American women being assumed to be always “remaining silent”, it suddenly stirs up my anger. Asian American women are not remaining scient, instead they stick together to reverse “social engineering”. According to The New York Times, “Although Asian-American women are likely to earn as much as white women, they are less likely to be in a management role.” Because of the existence of these invisible barriers, fighting for racial equality still has a long way to go.
