Week3
In the reading this week “The Time to Fight is Now: Asian American Women, Academia’s Socially ‘Engineered Privileged Oppressed,’ Go Rogue,” Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde let me know more information about the situation of female Asian American in academia because of their race and gender. As mentioned in the reading, “Asian American women are increasingly woke to the realities of academia and are ready to work together with others for positive changes (Valverde, 2013).” As more and more injustice and resistance placed on them, Asian American women start to do something together to strive to change their identity of being oppressed.
After I read the article, I felt sad for the situation Asian American women faced. There is no denying the existence of discrimination for women. For example, there are a lot of jobs only available to men. What more so for them to be Asian Americans. I can imagine how hard they are at that time. Asian American women need to pay much more effort than natives, and even with all their efforts, they cannot achieve the same status as the locals. The situation is not only in academia, but it also appears in many aspects of lives. I think society needs to pay more attention to discrimination based on gender and race to protect the minority.
My question is that isn’t diversity a good thing? Why there are so many people do not support the increase in race diversity?
