Reflection on the Corona Virus
These are uncertain times. I have found myself waking to only read the news. Everyday there's new statistics of cases and death. I feel like this is war time. There is a certain anxiety that follows this pandemic. How are people conducting self-care during the lockdown?
I left Davis only a few hours after Trump announced the travel ban to the UK. I am from England so I booked the first flight home. I could feel the tension in SFO. The airport was silent. No exciting chatter of traveling. Once landed in London, I was shocked to see no health screenings of arriving passengers. On the London Underground, a lady told me to turn around and face the wall. She could have been worried because I was Asian or because I had a suitcase. I obliged, but was still shocked. You have to be understanding in uncertain times like this. Everyone is fighting their own battle.
Truthfully, I am excited to learn about Asian American history. I grew up in a primarily white town in the North of England. My sister was the only other Asian that went to my Primary School. Moving to California was a mind-blowing culture shock. I am constantly in amazement of the Asian culture in California. I tried boba, Korean and Hawaiian BBQ, pho, proper sushi and ramen or the first time. Experiencing the diversity in California has opened my eyes and I can't go back to my sheltered life.
