Discrimination against Asian Americans is a social injustice that is often ignored. Many misled Americans believe that no one has discriminated against Asian Americans in American history. In fact, this kind of discrimination not only occurs in our modern society, but also dates back to the 19th century. Nearly a century ago, Asian Americans were denied the right to become citizens of the United States because they were considered illiterate, unwelcome, filthy and ill, and segregated into ethnic communities
Second, I think discrimination against Asian Americans needs to be corrected in social and interpersonal settings. As mentioned in reading, "Asian Americans are stereotyped as hard workers, high achievers, and economically successful" (Valverde, and Dariotis)most people usually use "stereotyped" impressions and labels on Asian Americans. These labels include intelligence and diligence. However, these "positive" stereotypes tend to get distorted, leading Asian Americans to be vilified for being too smart, too academic focused, and lacking social skills. These stereotypes will not only affect the social life of Asian Americans, but also have a negative impact on their mental health.
The stereotype of "smart" and "hard-working" of Asian Americans also makes Asian students feel anxious. They feel that they must achieve higher academic performance because of racial stereotype. If there is no discrimination, the prejudice against Asian Americans in social and interpersonal environment will gradually disappear.
This "model minority" double standard enables Asian American students to reach a higher standard. Every day, Asian Americans suffer unfair discrimination in education, social or interpersonal relationships, and professional settings. This injustice has had a negative impact on the lives of all Asian Americans. In order to reduce discrimination against Asian Americans and the suffering of Asian Americans caused by discrimination, we need to call on the whole society to pay attention to this issue.
Question: how can we call on the whole society to pay attention to the problem of discrimination against Asian Americans?
