There were multiple readings for this week, but the reading that stood out to me the most was the poem, "Who Killed Soek-Fang Sim?" by W.P. The poem relates to the topics we have been talking about in regards to Fight the Tower. Asian American women have always struggled to maintain a status in higher education, despite being a scholar or having many awards. The author of "Who Killed Soek-Fang Sim?" shared the struggles of remaining silent and feeling guilty when not speaking up and fight for justice. The question "will we ever be good enough?" also reminded me of the model minority myth stereotype. The myth was put onto Asian Americans simply saying we are high achieving and hard workers, but what happens if Asian American's done meet this criteria? At the end of the poem, W.P. mentions "Fear is no longer an option" and "Silence is no longer an option" (W.P. 79) These saying are a way to stand up for justice for the struggles within the Asian American community, specifically Asian American women in higher education and academia. W.P. wants to stand up for Soek-Fang and fight so no one will have to face and fight against discrimination alone.
