Upon reading the poem "Waking" by W.P., I immediately was able to tie it to our current situation. The poem entails a story about a rat which attempts to aim towards a deeper meaning of animal rights. This poem does entail a lot about indifferences and race however. I can tie this to the current situation that we are in as a whole, due to the fact that this rat is just happy to be alive. I think in this day in age we are taking things for granted, and this situation with COVID-19 may be a wake up call for us to start appreciating things more. In addition due to the fact that racial indifferences are mentioned, I personally think that this virus shows us a lot about how we are no different from each other whether it be differences in age, race, sex, ethnicity, etc. No matter who or what you are, at the end of the day you are human. With that being said, you are just as vulnerable to this virus as anyone else is. Although it many not have the same ultimate message, I am trying to convey how certain topics may be universal in the situation that we all currently find ourselves stuck in. Also a big theme behind this poem, is the issue of unconscious bias on behalf of the doctors. I also think this is important due to the fact that people blame asians as the origin of this virus yet people are still going to hangout with friends and spreading germs. They are knowingly being racist towards one group yet are part of the issue without it being brought to their attention. With that being said, who cares where it came from. I think the biggest thing is what are you as an individual going to bring to the table to help others?
