Patrick Abdon Week 5 SS1

Genevieve O’Brien’s Resistance Is Not Futile shows us a glaring example of how social media can actually benefit society (2019). By creating “Starfleet” through Facebook she was able to create a digital safe space for women of color in academia. What was once 100 members in the first few minutes of its creation to 10,000 members at the time of her article’s publication, Starfleet speaks to how widespread this issue is across the country.  It’s also important to realize how imperative it is to keep a group like that secret. Social media tends to hold a cesspool of inputs both good and bad. It muddies up the conversation and can sometimes lead into a downward spiral of nothingness. By keeping this group private it ensures that the right problems are being addressed with the people who share those very problems. I was actually genuinely surprised after all that she did for the group, she decides to leave academia anyways. It goes to show that not everything is worth completely fighting for but not fighting at all is entirely worse.
Mothering is Liberation explains how being a scholar doesn’t have to interfere with being a mother (Tintiangco 2019). The common stigma in academia is that by having a child you are hindering your progress in the Ivory Tower. There’s a sense that the child can hold back a person’s abilities to function. And while yes it does add an extra bit of time/effort, Allyson argues that mothering and schooling can go hand-in-head, using elements from both sides to be incorporated with each other. This article reminds me of one of last week’s article Care Work. Both show a distinct pedagogy centered around this motherly, caring love. It’s in complete opposition of what is the completive, hierarchical, patriarchal ways that we are so accustomed to nowadays.

Question: I wonder if this notion of a motherscholar can be implemented in other aspects of society like for  example the motherathlete?
