Matthew Kuangga, ASA 2, Week 5

For week 5 our theme is part 2 of the previous week’s theme of “Do or Do Not. There Is No Try”. For this week I am particularly intrigued by the reading titled “Mothering Is Liberation” where the author talks about how women with children are discriminated against in academia. This form of discrimination in academia seemed to be practiced to both tenured and nontenured women according to Cubales. Further on in the reading Cubales argued ways and alternatives in how mothering and professorship could go hand in hand. How a holistic mix of these two elements could bring about better health and well-being both on an individual level and on an academic level.
It never seemed to cross my mind that women with children are discriminated in academia, moreover they also need to spend more time to care for their children besides their studies. So, it is definitely more pressure for women with children in academia as compared to other regular students. Hence, I support the movement to stop discrimination against them in academia and providing more support for them to succeed in it. I still think that the examples and views that Cubales gave in the reading are quite extreme forms of discrimination against women with children because I can not see myself or others that I know around me to do those things or think in that way. So my question is: Aren’t we all more equal today than ever before?
