Adrija Chaudhuri Week 5 SS1

In this week's reading, Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales explores the strange dichotomy that exists between professionalism and motherhood in "Motherhood is Liberation". If a woman so chooses to have children whilst in academia, it is deemed as unprofessional. However, the same when it comes to fatherhood is not viewed as unprofessionalism. Instead, the argument is that a mother cannot be a good professor, though the choice to have children has no bearing towards whether she is a good professor or not. For me, this is sexism at one of its finest. It attacks womanhood (should someone choose to be mother-though womanhood is not defined by the choice to have a child or not).

Another reading was "Resistance is Not Futile" by Genevieve Erin O'Brien focuses on adjunct professors. These professors have to work part-time (but the amount of effort is that or more of tenured professors) and are not paid well. A lot of people of color, namely women of color are part of the academic workforce that make of adjunct professors. The text calls for a movement that would be able to overthrow the unfairness that is a result of the disparity in payment and workload of adjunct professors.
