Section A01
Week 6
This week we are
focusing on Asian American’s mental health, and in “On Some College Campuses, A
Focus On Asian American Mental Health” by New America Media, the author
suggests that students from Asian backgrounds tend to have a higher risk of
metal illness than students of other races, because they have to face various
cultural-related problems and pressure. For instance, in Joanna Chen’s story, she
was supposed to be good at math by her peers and her father even pushed her
more by asking the teacher to give her extra homework starting at second grade.
The concept of being perfect is deeply rooted in most Asian’s mind, thus they are
putting a lot of pressures on themselves and pushing themselves beyond limit.
I totally understand how these Asian students
feel since I noticed that in Asian communities, you must be the best in order to
be recognized. Conversely, in American communities, people believe that everyone
has their own values and uniqueness. This difference makes Asian students
continuously pushing themselves, thus leading to higher risk of mental disease.
Another problem is that students from Asian background seldom tell their family
about the problem since they also have a pressure from their family and do not
want to let anybody down or worry. Therefore, their mental illness is hard to know
and usually when it is recognized, it is already too late. Therefore, my
question is: “what are the ways we can detect students with mental illness?”
