Section: A02
Week 6
The article “On
Some College Campuses, A focus On Asian American Mental Health” discusses the
consequences of Asian Americans mental health and stability. This article also
addresses negatives with model minority myth, which we discussed in week three.
Just as before model minority does create extra stress on Asian American
students especially since they have an internal need to be successful
themselves. Not only is the model minority status on of the factors that
impedes on Asian American mental health but also a lot of it focuses on family
and community pressures. Having a commitment to the family, especially those
who have immigrant families who sacrificed a lot for them, burdens students to
strive to be better and push themselves more success and education. In reality
family does have a major role in al students choice of what career path they choose.
Having parents who pay for a child’s education definitely controls what type of
education they will pay for and restricting their children to go for a path that
is not in their interest. Personally, my parents could not really afford my
education, and I fund myself. With the three jobs I maintain while in school to
pay for my education and rent, I got to choose about what path I was going for.
If my parents were paying, I would have definitely have not changed out of the
pre health field, yet I was already stressed out with that field and did not
have many social interactions just as the article suggests. The lack of social
interaction I got heightened my anxiety I have, and at times made me feel very isolated
in such a huge campus. I definitely believe that counseling is something many
Asian American students should seek out or just having another outlet where
they can express themselves, so their stress levels lower. There needs to be a
better way to help Asian American students with their mental health, because it
is a real thing that many students experience.
This image is
from a youtube video, where stress for Asian Americans is discussed especially
for those in college, and discusses some ways to destress.
Question: How do we create other programs, not only
counseling, such as social clubs to help focus on the mental wellness of Asian
Americans?
