Xinyang Xu A02 week 9

Academia should not be place full of competition and waiting every scholars to fight for the scarce source. Wei Ming Dariotis raises and good idea in her article, “Academic Symbiosis: A Manifesto on Tenure and Promotion in Asian American Studies”, Academic symbiosis. This reciprocal idea refers to a building a thoughtfully supportive academic community, instead of fighting over scarce resources.

If the Academic Symbiosis works, it would eliminate the unnecessary fights of tenure and promotion. In order to resolve these fights, the author points out the biggest problem that the competition in academia are letting scholars pursuing individual achievement too much and neglect the true inventiveness of academia.  Although the competition in academia are designed to inspires so-called excellence, according to the article, “in a true form of such a system, everyone would have their basic needs met and the competitors would be supported by teamwork designed to enhance their maximum potential.”

By applying the Academic Symbiosis goal, community-relevant and community-accessible productions are all valued. The evaluation system changed thoroughly, which focus shifts from faculty member’s job description to creative work such as films, videos, visual art, performing arts, literary arts, and curating exhibits or performances. If all these new changes in evaluation system apply, there would be a magnificent change to whole academia.

Question: How possible does Academic Symbiosis can be apply to academia?
