In the reading “Conclusion: Academics Awaken Power, Resistance, and Being Woke” by Kieu Linh Caroline, Wei Ming Dariotis conclude that institutions like the academy have the power to support themselves, and not serving the people that depend on them are oppressing those people. There needs to be a change in the academy’s structure to support the students, scholars, and faculty to be a place that allows them to seek the truth and receive the education they deserve. Asian American women scholars in academia, whether they are a student or a scholar, are dealing with challenges in their environment. Although they dealt with challenges like race and gender, they have to deal with the university structure. Asian American women in academia used to accept that injustice that they faced, and believe that they always cause their failures. However, they realize that the positive stereotypes had been a part of their lives and had created this separation from other communities. I see these positive stereotypes affect my experience as a community college student and see other students of color struggle transfer continue their education. There was an organization created to support Asian American students transfer to a university since there was an increase of students from this community dropping out of community college. The university’s structure had set a role for Asian-American scholars to reach their master’s or doctorate’s goal and never challenge the university’s system. However, Asian Americans are not allowed to move past their assigned goal in this university’s structure and made them dispensable. Asian American scholars are challenging the structure and slowly change the structure to help scholars, faculty, and students of color. I believe Ethnic Studies, and Gender Studies can take different narratives into perspectives to look past the dominant narrative. Communities will be able to deconstruct the stereotypes surrounding them and be able to advocate for themselves in the future. Many communities are dealing with the dominant narrative of their community in American society. It’s going to take time to deconstruct their history and experiences to have their truth spoken out. Scholars of color are using their knowledge to destructure the university to support all students, faculty, and scholars who allow the university to function.
When knowing that university is exploiting students, faculty, and scholars with the structure that supports the small percentage, what is the best way to advocate and change the system to validate all their experience?
