Tian Tian, A03, Week 9 Blog

Week 9 Blog
This week, we read the article “Academic Symbiosis: A Manifesto on Tenure and Promotion in Asian American,” written by Wei Ming Dariotis. In the article, Wei wants to create a system of support as academic symbiosis. Wei wants to create a positive environment because the atmosphere of academia nowadays is oppressive. The stress comes from tenure and promotion. People who work in academia regard tenure and promotion as an achievement. However, it is not easy to get tenure. Even though Wei performs well in every aspect, she is denied for her promotion. The pressure of obtaining tenure and promotions is a mountain on everyone, causing mental harm and stress.

Wei provides a way to get out this circle – academic symbiosis, creating an academic community in which we each bring what can share. It is a new idea which has not to be proven, but I like this idea. Academia and college should be a place for sharing. If each one in academia, including students, teachers, and faculties, could being all the things they have to share, we will have infinite resources in academia. To regard academia as a whole will reduce the competition caused by the individual’s needs. Although I appreciate this idea, there is a disparity between nowadays academia and academic symbiosis. We have a long way to go.

Question: Academic symbiosis could be achieved if everyone shares the idea of “asset.” If one person or a small part of people do not agree with this idea, how could academic symbiosis achieve?
