Why Ferguson Matters to Everyone: The Militarization of America’s Police

Ferguson is currently under the spotlight for its many instance of supposed racial discrimination by the local police force.  While it may never be possible to determine whether the shootings of Blacks in the Ferguson were racially charged, these recent events and the show of force by the Ferguson police department have pointed to a problem much more encompassing and universal that threatens all Americans.  The recent militarization of many American police departments evidences an ever growing distrust between the citizens and those who govern them.  With police departments around the country now in possession of military grade weaponry, riot gear and armored vehicles, the voice of the people grow ever weaker in this new police state, where the police no longer exist to protect the citizens, but rather the officials who source their paycheck.  Who then, and what, can protect Americans from governmental tyranny, corruption and oppression?

Question: Why must everything be reduce to and portrayed as a racial issue, even when much greater things are at stake?
