Fighting Privatization, Occupy Activists at CUNY and UC Kick Into High Gear – Josh Eidelson

Week 4

In this piece by Josh Eidelson, “Fighting Privatization, Occupy Activists at CUNY and UC Kick into High Gear” the privatization of public universities is exposed through the two key movements from UC Davis and CUNY. The protest revealed the evidences and effects of police brutality and privatization of public universities.

What stood out to me the most were the statements against the police officers. I understand that the excessive force used against students during peaceful protests is wrong, but I am against the demonization of police officers. I grew up and still reside in West Oakland. I learned the importance of making friends with not only neighbors but also police officers. I have seen police officers clear riots that were destroying local small businesses and also police officers who set a perimeter for a break-in and homicide case right next to my house. Even in UC Davis, there were cases of suicide/homicides and break-in in North Davis in the past few months. I cannot justify the wrongs that police officers commit throughout the nation, but I believe police officers are essential in maintaining order and peace. There are plenty of cases of police brutality, but there are also many cases of police officers saving lives. I think that police officers are just following orders. Perhaps, police officers are victims caught in the crossfire during fights for change.

What change can be implemented to lessen the resentment and tension between the police force and the public?
