Section 2
The
common factor between the pepper spraying incident and the occupy movement
described in this article is how the administrators at the university is
choosing to ignore the voices of its students. Instead of addressing the real
issue on why students are protesting, Chancellor Katehi is using a
passive-aggressive approach. On one hand, she’s ignorant to the reason behind
the protests, and focuses on the negative impact the students made on the
school. She is essentially blaming the
students. However, she later proposed “students are increasingly frustrated and
angry about reductions in state support for higher education.” She’s
essentially diverting the problem away from the UC system and pushing the blame
onto the government. The chancellor herself is not taking any actions to
rectify this problem. This kind of reasoning shows they never had the intentions
of thinking over the student’s proposal. By comparing how Berkeley and Davis
handled the situation, these kinds of actions can easily bring down the
reputation of a UC.
The government is trying to pursue free education in
community colleges. My question is, how are they going to help UC students with
their tuition?
