Week 2 reading reflection
The topic of this week’s reading materials is about high education of Asian American students and pacific students, derived from admit rate, students population and so on.
There are many debates, protests, discussions and affirmative actions about “equal opportunity in education”, and different groups have different point of views. In “Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in California: How Higher Education Diversity Benefits Our Communities”, UC faculty admissions committee stated that “Standardized test scores and academic performance must be reviewed in the context of factors that impact test performance including students’ personal and academic circumstances....”, which can be simply concluded that, admissions committee should take into consideration the overall factors that some of them cannot be simply standardized.
However, I believe that there is no perfect conclusion nor solution toward equalizing education resource. “Equal” is highly depends on what people stand for, including race, stratum, geometry and so on. That means, I often feel confused while reading different arguments from opposite groups, especially when I tried to be neutral and get a big picture. For example, in article “Quota of Excellence ---The Asian American Admissions Debate”, a comparison is mentioned between Asian American students and other minority group of students “... Asian American students was not considered to be ‘educationally disadvantaged’ like other non-white minority groups”. I think that this statement is very controversy, but this statement also results in a thinking that, if we admit more Asian American students than other minority groups due to their academic performance, we loose diversity of students population. However if we admit more minority students, could we say that, it is not equal to those Asian American students?
Should we judge “equal” for welfare of all-people, or for what we are belonging to?
This is an ultimate problem in my mind.
