Unlike normal public who have various criteria in their minds, academia, might only has very limited standards like the number of published papers in high quality journals. Publishing papers is generally objective enough, because a published paper needs to be examined by different authority scientists or editors, which is fair in most of time. However, scientists themselves are subjective, and what’s more important is that, the scientific community is much smaller than general public community. Though they are concerning more about academic and research level when judging a new bird, they are easily focus his or her background, reputation, even personal tendency, which will bring out a lot of “unfair judgment”. For example, women is still minority in science and engineers, even in the history, which is the same situation as colored people. This is historic reason causes general scientists feel weak confidence towards those minority new scientists.
Also, modern science was greatly contributed during WW2 and Cold War, which required more male scientists into military system, which also caused the situation nowadays.
However, all of them are not legal reasons for bias been happened. “Fight the Tower” is a real scream from a women scientist of color. In her manifesto, she listed a lot of existed problems. I admit those problems, and I wonder, if we can create a new authority system that gives every scientist a fair and objective chances, make them be admired by others, no matter what his or her gender nor racial is?
