Section 2
Week 2
Remember Who the Real Enemy Is
Fear is very underrated as a weapon. Many people who have mastered the use of fear as a weapon were somehow connected to the 9-11 attacks. Al-Qaeda’s intentions are often disputed but if they wanted the world to fear them, mission accomplished, especially for the USA, which over the next few months and even years turned from a proud and seemingly invincible nation to a vulnerable, defensive, and paranoid one. George Bush used fear as an excuse or justification. He knew fear was prominent, so all he had to do was pinpoint an enemy, which he would dub “the Axis of Evil” which would allow him to receive approval for US involvement in war in the Middle East. One instance provoking fear proved to be Pandora’s Box and now we’re on alert for potential nuclear attacks from North Korea or upheaval from Syria or Palestine. It is especially effective when an enemy is identified, but it’s all based on perspective. For all we know, we could be someone’s enemy. Maybe we need to be as concerned with who is calling someone “the enemy” as with who is being called the enemy, because this is just like the Hunger Games in some ways because of politics and manipulation blurring these allegedly clear lines.
How do we overcome fear and make a difference when the most powerful people in society can use fear as a manipulation technique?
