Week 7 A02 Thomas Tran

In "The Coddling of the American Mind" it discusses the growing amount of controlling parents and the over protection of students. Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt draws attention to the rising conflicts within colleges regarding what should and should not be taught in the curriculum. This is the cause of the growing fear that it may trigger or offend some of the students. The article touches upon how the different generations have changed from children spending time outside and now children being inside on their iPads and laptops. They believe that by exposing them to more of these "harmful" and "touchy" topics that it can actually be beneficial to their future.

I do believe that trigger warnings and shielding students from offending topics has gone too far. But i also believe that there is a good and bad speech that is being spoken or preach in todays society. I understand that in the real world people are not going to care what offends you and what is harmful to you; however, by speaking up and proposing your views to the best of your abilities and in a peaceful manner will go a long way.

How can we create a learning environment or culture to better minimize the amount of trigger warnings and at the same time respect the ones that are triggered?
