Week 8
This week upon reading "Precariously Positioned:Asian American Women Students Negotiating Power in Academic Wonderland" I learned more about what I believe an important yet overlooked issue in today's educational climate. Upon initial reading, I was struck with how interestingly the article was able to incorporate the theme of Alice in Wonderland in with the topic of Asian American women struggling in their individual fights for education and leadership. I found the metaphor intriguing, as Alice herself is known as the girl who was continuously lost in a world of unexpected twists and turns where each choice she makes can lead to either a way out of the land or add to her downfall. Adding the traditional and well known story of Alice in Wonderland along with today's issues of Asian American women in education was very ironic. Going back to the content of the article, I found it disheartening how the Asian American female college student who attended the leadership retreat did not get the most out of it that she could. For example, how those coordinating the retreat only went very surface level into the topic of leadership. I find this to be especially unfortunate because I have personally attended a few leadership workshops and retreat during my time here at UC Davis, and have learned a great deal about Asian American education issues in addition to exploring multiple leadership techniques. I feel that this method should be implemented more into university leadership retreats and workshops. I personally feel that to directly address the issue of the lack of resources for Asian American women in education, is to empower them through helpful and in depth resources. This also goes along with a possible reason as to why there are psychologists at Asian American leadership retreats, to address and enlighten individuals who may need the mental support through experiencing these new things and being exposed to new and possibly controversial ideas.
Question: If more modern issues are brought to light by using comparison methods to traditional stories such as the article did, will it resonate better with the public?
