In the reading "Asian American Women Students' Negotiating Power in the Academia," by Shannon Deloso explains her experience in reclaiming her power while negotiating with the university to keep Ethnic Studies. She had to deal with the university's structure that is biased against ethnicity, gender, and race. The university expected her and many Asian American scholars to be silent since they did not want them to know that they have the power to prompt and defend themselves against the university. With the university's structure, students are not able to voice and advocate for themselves due to suppression in student activism. She shows how the university's system worked when she began to become active in defending Ethnic Studies, and how students like us being told that we know nothing, and our opinion doesn't matter. The university is willing to risk students' lives to keep the structure they have and money in their pockets. Student activism is necessary for students to have a voice, have their opinion heard, and have the university be working towards the needs of their students and faculty. I was able to relate to her experience when dealing with the norms within our culture that women need to be quiet, never questioning authorities, and having a voice. It was amazing how she overcame the idea of being respectful to elders, which meant you had no opinion about anything. Despite struggling with this idea, I am still working on voicing my opinion and want to help the community. I agree with the students when they say that Ethnic Studies show the students their experience in the university, supporting our communities, and improve the lives of all people in our society. It is essential to have student activism to fight against the oppressive structure that the university has to have control of what they want instead of supporting what the students, faculty, and the community needs.
