Week 5 Blog

For this week's reading, I was interested in the piece called "Precariously Positioned: Asian American Women Student' Negotiating Power in Academia," but Shannon Deloso. In this reading, I was able to learn and understand more about the hardships Asian American women go through in higher education/academia. The writer herself was a student activist who continued to fight against the university's administration. I find it very powerful and very passionate that students and faculty are fighting to protect and make change within the education system. Even though activism in academia can seem very difficult at times, that one step towards change always makes a difference. For example, the SFSU protest to bring Ethnic Studies to the curriculum. Majority of the students back then protested and fought against the administration in order to have Ethnic studies courses taught at SFSU. As mentioned in the reading, the writer, Deloso, explains that she wants to protect all students, professors, and faculty. Despite being taught to respect her elders and to "stay silent," she chose to fight for justice and create a voice for everyone. Why is that Asian American women need to abide by these "rules?" This is still a practice that some cultures use to this day, but there is now change that is happening. Many Asian American women are fighting for their right for social justice and to make themselves heard.
