Haolin Li, Week 5, A01

After readingThe Cost of Speaking” by W.P., I was shocked by how serious the discrimination can hurt Asian American people in academy, and this article reminds me the problems brought by “model minority stereotypes”. This stereotype made many people trust that Asian American people will have achievement in work or academy, without consider their personal abilities. Asian American people are expected to have higher achievements compared with others, but many of them are just normal people like all the others. When they have high achievements they will hardly be praised, but if they do not have high achievement, their peers and teachers will thought that they do not work hard, and refuse to help them. This author was denied by his college just because he is not good enough, although he is pretty excellent.

In many universities many Asian American students are suffering from the “model minority stereotype.” According to the article “Understanding the Influence of Model Minority Stereotypes on Asian American Community College Students” many Asian American student have experienced racial microaggressions related to model minority stereotypes which are hold by their peers and their instructors. This stereotype will always cover up the truth of racism and discrimination behind many phenomena.
