Speaking is not only a form of expression but could also be a way to save others. In the poem written by W.P., she noted that a lot of women are “shushed, shunned, shamed” for speaking out and telling others what they believe in. Nonetheless, despite her caution, W.P. said that it is also the salvation, not only for women but also for everyone around us. Accordingly, I realized that W.P.’s (n.d.) message is essential even in today’s society. Many would believe that everyone is already enjoying their own freedoms regardless of race, gender, and creed due to the dominance of mass media in our lives. However, what most don’t realize is that particular systemic discrimination against gender and race still exists, and it is only through speaking up that we can save ourselves from these issues and achieve equality in the long run. Perhaps one good example of how speaking through social media has saved women’s lives was the #MeToo Movement. Starting in 2006, it consistently gained traction until a few years back, where women have become empowered to prevent sexual abuse and know their rights with the help of social media.
Another essential piece of article that I have read concerning the issue of abuse was Deloso’s “Precariously Positioned: Asian American Women Students’ NegotiatingPower in Academia.” In line with the issue of speaking up, Deloso (2019) highlighted how Asian Women are seen to be very obedient and passive to fight for what they believe for against the administration. In my opinion, his shows yet another type of systemic gender inequality, which can also be resolved with the help of speaking up against people who abuse it since most would think that it is not as severe compared to what the #MeToo Movement is fighting for.
