Hanling Zhu ASA2 A02 Week5

In this week’s reading "The Cost of Speaking" in Fight The Tower: Asian American women scholars resistance and renewal in the academy, the article talked about a female professor’s experience and I was really impressed by her. The professor is excellent in teaching and researching. However, because of her race, she failed to get the chance of promotion. This brave professor stands out and speaks out for her equal rights. However, the college hires top lawyers to win the lawsuit, which makes her situation in the college worse off. I felt so sad when I read her unfortunate experience.

From my perspective, it is really important for us to have people who willing to speak up. If nobody speaks up for the unequal treatment, then the situation of minorities will become worse and worse while the majority get stronger and stronger. However, in the experience in our reading this week, although the female professor speaks up for herself, the result is not good, or we can say that is a true tragedy. I think the discrimination toward Asian Americans was really serious at that time, and even though people do a lot of jobs to fight for discrimination, there still be a long way to go to.

Question: how to solve the problem of discrimination better?
