ASA 2 section 1
The article "Asian Pacific American's Social Movements and Interest Groups" focuses on the individual focuses of South Asian Americans, Japanese Americans, Indian Americans, and Filipino Americans as well as the pan ethnic collaboration of Asian Americans as a whole. Historically, in the 1960's and 70's Asian Americans were able to collaborate on many social issues, such as immigration, pan ethnically because of shared interests and needs. However, local laws and local government efforts worked to segregate many Asian American communities, resulting ethnic towns such as China town, Korea town, Japan town, Manilla town. It is interesting to note that while Japan town, China town, and Korea town survived historical urban renewal efforts by the city of San Francisco, Manila town did not. I wonder if the pan ethnic generalization of "Asian American Issues" overshadows and diminishes the attention given to each individual ethnicity's needs and social issues.
My question: How do ethnicities in the Asian hemisphere differentiate
between "Asian" and "Pacific Islander"? In what ways are the needs of
these two pan ethnicities different?
