Social Movements and Interest Groups

LITING XUAN
SECTION 2
WEEK 1

In the article Asian Pacific Americans’ Social Movements and Interest Groups, authors mention that racial discrimination is widespread and early Asian immigrants suffered injustice when they came to United States. The native white workers and farmers felt threatened by the new Asian immigrants, so early Asian immigrants are forced by racial violence and legal restrictions to retreat into Chinatowns. This reminds me of my situation when my family and I immigrated to America, which was entirely different from the article. My family and I came to U.S. several years ago, and we got a lot of help from our neighborhood and the community. We have had equal rights and fair treatment, such as health insurance, unemployment insurance and so on. In addition, some specialized agencies offer help for us to learn English and look for labor market opportunities. However, because of the economic crisis, nowadays the government has been cutting budgets to reduce spending to improve the financial situation.

Therefore, my question is how can we improve our Asian immigrant communities given low budget?
