Richard Yee
Response to: Free Speech Movement

This article spoke about the activist movements that were sparked on the UC Berkeley campus during the Civil Rights movement. Students challenged the University's policies regarding political free speech. Through a series of protests and non violence methods, students were able to pressure the administration into giving them the free speech rights that they desired. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article. I thought that the method the students chose to fight the administration was done very tactfully. Students did not riot or cause damage. They resisted the efforts of the university in a non violent way. It's so great to hear how they were able to negotiate with the administration and receive the free speech rights that are guaranteed in our first amendment. My question would be to understand why the administration worked so hard to prevent these rights from being given. Was it just to make it easier to control students? How did they justify their actions?
