Week 1
This was a thought provoking piece, but I would classify this as an opinion piece, and not treat it academically. There were many unsubstantiated claims in Boggs' piece, and she also presented some of her opinions as facts. "Asian Americans would be among the most sought after fashion models
and TV news anchors", and "Asian banks in Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and
India could plunge this country into the greatest of all financial crises by
moving their foreign exchange out of the dollar and into Euro or other
currencies;" are completely unfounded - she cited no sources, and I couldn't find anything online agreeing with them. Also, economics isn't nearly that simple. I also really disagreed with "... increasing pathology of global capitalism—its commoditization
of all aspects of our lives, its destruction of communities and
of natural wealth in order to create paper wealth, its pushing the lifesupport
systems of the planet to the point of collapse...". Again this is all terribly unfounded and purely baseless opinion. Yes, things are commoditized - I don't expect you to grow your own food. Also what is the distinction between "natural wealth" vs "paper wealth"? This is just made up. And life support systems are not on the brink of collapse.. Yes, I really agree that it is necessary for us to be more environmentally friendly, but this is just hyperbole. Aside from these opinions (I don't mean to nitpick too much but baseless opinion presented as fact bothers me), I thought that the movement of the Zapatistas was really interesting. (This movement is fact, not opinion.) They occupied Mexican cities not to take power, but to create space for the indigenous people of south Mexico. This implies that they didn't have space before, and that they were fighting against oppression. Overall, this article made some good points.
