Week 8 - Tiffany Nguyen

The article "What Asian Americans Are Bringing to Campus Movements for Racial Justice" really highlighted the lack of attention and action taken within Asian American political movements and Asian Americans in activism. While acknowledging that some Asian Americans can be uninterested and apolitical when it comes to speaking up, the article recognizes that there are Asian Americans who do stray away from the typical radio silence. However, what issues can Asian Americans talk about without taking away the urgency from issues like the Black Lives Matter Movement? While there are issues and racism that takes place in the Asian community, a strong movement has not been formed yet. Personally, I feel as though there isn't enough light on Asian community issues since the concept of model minority has constantly been perpetuated and drilled into our heads to the point that we, as Asian Americans, embrace and adopt this title ourselves. However, while we slowly build our case, we should rise up and call others to action alongside us to address issues such as colorism and anti-blackness within our own communities. I know this can be challenging, since I myself, tend to be hesitant to voice my opinion. Since I am aware that I do this, and that it follows the Asian American stereotype that the girls can be timid and shy, I am working on challenging myself to be more vocal. As they say, you're not making progress unless you're uncomfortable, and I have definitely been uncomfortable trying to do so.

Question:
Although affirmative action has been outruled, why is it that it is still used discreetly to judge Asian Americans on a inflated and exaggerated scale along with the concept of model minority?
