Week 8 - Chelsea Reyes A02


Reading the article by Putterman was really inspiring since it brought up facts that I have noticed within our own university. Overall, Asian American students do not seem to be the most active when it comes to student protests, or general. It was nice to see how at other universities, Asian Americans show solidarity with other minorities in their fights for equality within their campus, but I feel that Asian Americans should also put that much effort into our own movements. At one point in the reading, it mentioned how someone wrote on YikYak how annoying it was to see so many Asians studying at the library and another Asian American student agreed about it. Asian American is such a broad term to group so many different kinds of Asians together. We may not all agree on the same issues, but we should still all show solidarity with one another so each other can achieve the goals that they strive for. It was also a bit upsetting when Putterman mentioned how at one university, some of the Chinese international students did not identify themselves as part of the Asian American community. Even though it is such a broad term, I feel that we would be a lot stronger as a whole rather than divided based on where we come from. We all share some sort of similar values and that should be enough to stand together as one.

It feels like Asian American history/sense of identity is not taught often within university (whether its here, or in Yale where the reading mentions that less than 2 out of 2000 undergrad classes were within the field of Asian American studies). Is this something that Asian American students could/would be willing to strive for together in terms of the curriculum offered?
