Week 8 - Nai Saechao - Section A03

After reading “What a Shaman Sees in a Mental Hospital” by Stephanie Mahron, I was able to understand the what Dr. Some’s reason for coming to the U.S. and it shows how much his research within America. Dr. Some is a shaman from an ethnic group in Africa. From reading this, I understand that Dr. Some believes that the psychic phenomena helps with mental disorders, but in the U.S. the disorder is meant to be treated. I believe that some people have mental disorders because of past event that were traumatic and in those situations they probably will not go away until you talk to someone about it or be treated.
In my culture we solve most of our problems with a ceremonial event that will help solve issues like bad spirits, to give good luck or for New Years. I think that my family follows Dr. Some to a certain point because we treat illnesses with both ways. We also go to hospitals or places where we can get treated.
