Week 8 Jianwei Zhu A01

For this week's reading, I Would Always Rather be Abnormal than Holistic by Shana Bulhan Haydock, Haycock discussed what it means to be abnormal and talk about a mental health problem is not necessary a bad thing. She talks about how mental health is something that you can not get rid of, it is something you have to learn how to deal with and it will always be there. But it not big of a deal, because being fucked up and broken is just a state of abnormality. We don’t have to be always normal, she believes it’s okay to have a mental health issue because it’s part of our lives. Today, numerous pharmaceutical companies are trying to make money on people’s mental health problems by making and advertising antidepressant. If you are feelings abnormal or don’t like the way you feel, go to your doctor and they prescribe you the medications you need to feel “normal” again. In a long period of time, we start to believe we actually have a mental health problem that only medication can solve the “problem”. In fact, we are just a bunch of consumers providing these companies with endless money. We fail into a trap that makes us believe that mental health is a big problem and we need medications.

Question: How can we break free from using medication to make us temporary feel better?
