Week 8 Lucero Hernandez Cruz A04

In the reading the message was clear on how the author did not want to be considered “normal” she would have rather be abnormal. There is a phrase that I have used before where it says “normal is boring and being abnormal is underrated” however I never took the time to fully analyze what that phrase meant. Normal in terms of mental illness is something individuals may want to seek however society has this negative stigma on any type of mental illness. The marginalization of individuals with mental illness do not allow for these individuals to pursue “normal” which is why Shana expresses her opinions on even when you think you are normal, society still rejects you because you had/have a mental illness. Furthermore, although more awareness exists about mental disorders/illnesses not everyone has grasped its full definition that it is not something you can have one day and get rid of the next day; rather, its an ongoing process and it is challenging because it occurs in the mind so people do not see the battles others are going through. Individuals may want to be normal at the end of the day it is better to be abnormal because although you fight what people may want to see which is “normal” you are already battling one battle so why not fight society as well since unfortunately, it is hard to please everyone in society.

Question: If the idea of normal was expanded in other categories such as mental illness, beauty, etc. would it decrease the various issues people encounter in their lifetime?
