Yuxin Shen ASA 002 A03 Week 6

In the first reading, Mouavangsou illustrates the unequal treatment of male and female in Hmong communities and miseducation to the young generation of Hmong people. The author is a Hmong girl, and when she was young she heard that there is equity in present society, she did not feel that she as a girl treated equally in her family and community. Therefore, she worked hard to compensate for the truth that she is a female. While she grew up, she finds that there are stereotypes about her cultures and miseducation in her community. She wants to eliminate the stereotypes from others to Hmong people and find the flaw of the unsuccessful education of Hmong students under the US educational system. Therefore, she becomes an instructor at UC Davis and is responsible for teaching Hmong cultures in the university. I agree with the first improper perspective that many parents tell their children: education can help them to get a stable financial condition in the future. For me, the purpose of education is to explore what I want to do in the future which is not equal to finding the most effective way to earn money. Since people will be painful to force themselves to do the job they do not like, although they may have the ability to earn lots of money. They still will not feel happiness. As Mouavangsou choosing to become an instructor in a university, I think this career has essential meaning to her since she can use the university as a platform to tell more students a better way to treat history and culture of Hmong.

In the second article, professor Takeyama is a Japanese cultural anthropologist, and she records how she fights as an international scholar. I can understand her challenges as an international professor since the language barrier is a difficulty for international students or faculties in the college. Takeyama makes efforts in preparing lectures and writing books in English which is not her mother language. Although the female professors do not have the same probability of earning awards in the colleges as the male professors, they are expected to care about students. On her way of fighting the tower, she meets many difficulties, yet she believes that "we have already achieved equality, what we need are more kinds of people". I like this sentence, no matter what circumstances we are in, we need to accept and appreciate the diversity.
