This week, I read
the article “Hmong Does Not Mean Free: The Miseducation of and by Hmong
Americans” which is written by Kaozong
N. Mouavangsou. The reading is introducing the author’s life in the United
States as a Hmong person. The personal experience emphasizes most on the
education system of the United States which correlate to the different race of
people. By conducting many pieces of interviews with another person, the
reading also gives a lot of evidence to prove the idea, which the miseducation
of the Hmong community is a common phenomenon in the United States. There are
many reasons for causing this. The main reason is because of the gender
stereotypes and the lack of Hmong representation in the education system. All
these would influence the young Hmong children during the time they are
learning in school. This would also have a negative effect on their future
life. Another point is internalizing negative stereotypes, which could result
in the culture default. To correct it well, the education of the young
generation would be the crucial point.
First of all, it is
important to help the young generation to understand the culture of the Hmong.
Then, the duty of the teacher and educator is making this culture message
correlate to education in daily school work. Because young people would
experience different education to their parents which we would call the first
immigrant. In order to find the best way, it is so important to make customized
lessons for these young people.
