In the reading“Hmong Does Not Mean Free: The Miseducation of and by Hmong Americans,” the author points out the miseducation of many Hmong. In order to get into the American society and get accepted by the American culture, the second-generation of Hmong community are expected to assimilate to American customs, culture, and language. The second-generation is now giving up their own Hmong culture and disdain to understand it because they think they are already Americans. This results of a loss of Hmong culture as Mouavangsou states. In general, the youth are studying two different cultures, and the most important thing they have to learn is the intersections of two cultures.
My cousin is an American born Chinese and his first language is English. But my uncle taught him Chinese language and Chinese culture from the earliest epoch of his conscious life. I have seen many American born Chinese, he is the one who perfectly understand and integrate into both Asian and American communities in U.S. I think his success is resulted of the education he received in his childhood. Therefore, it is impossible to let the Asian culture survive in American society and also assimilate to American culture.
