Week 8
The article "What Asian Americans are Bringing to Campus Movements for Racial Justice" by Mark Tseng Putterman discusses how Asian-Americans are questioning where they stand within campus racial-justice protests. This is due to the dispute between the 'Black and White' that Asian-Americans don't know where they fall under those two categories. The article starts off by introducing a real life experience through the eyes of a fellow Asian-American who was blocked by a group of protesters. When he tried getting into the protest, a Black women told him that they need their own space. Therefore, they went back and forth arguing about the right he has to be there. This led to him wondering whether or not people of his kind have a part in racial injustice. One of the questions that were brought up in the article was "Are Asian Americans people of color?". This particular question stood out to me because I've wondered this many times. As a Filipino-American, it's had to decipher which racial group I fall under because we're all so used to 'Black and White'. I'm sure that many people who are Asian-Americans wonder the same thing because we're people of "yellow" and "brown". There really isn't a place for us or as it seems. Many of us still feel like the minority which is still pretty true. As an Asian-American college student, it still continues for us as well which we read in the last week's article.
Question: Why does society overlook the Asian-American culture and how can we prevent them from disregarding us when we have the same rights?
