What Asian Americans Are Bringing to Campus Movements by Mark Tseng Putterman really resonated with me because do Asian American voices really count in other social movements? As the model minority, students who identify as API often times do not participate in movements that do not have to do with themselves. It is the same that goes for other people of color as well.
Although we have have a diverse campus at UC Davis, how diverse are we? We have clubs that help represent the minorities on campus, but do the clubs help bring minorities together? Fundraisers for the respective clubs are supported by each represented minority. Each ethnic and racial group is separated - leaving many minorities marginalized. The POC community can be stronger - we can be stronger together. However, the separation of each minority makes me less likely to intermingle and represent POC as whole as well.
Question: Why are POC separated into minorities while "white people" are never separated into respective groups?
